Ice-cavern of Dobsina
This
protected natural formation is one of the most interesting and most valuable
natural phenomena of Slovakia.
The cave was discovered on July 15 in 1870 by mining-engineer Jenő Ruffinyi
and his team. In 1871 it was open to public. In 1887 it was the first European
cave to have electricity. The entrance of the cave is in the northern side
of Mt. Ducsa in 969,5 m
high, the length of the cave is 1232m. The places
in the cavern compared to the entance gets gradually deeper that enables
the cave together with the northern orientation to stay cold in the winter
months. In summer the lighter warm air doesn't get into the cave so the
average temperature is under 0 degrees all year. The constant repetition
